Suquamish, Washington

Suquamish is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,140 at the 2010 census. Located within the Port Madison Indian Reservation, it is the burial site of Chief Seattle and the site of the Suquamish tribe winter longhouse known as Old Man House.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.5 square miles (19.3 km2), of which 6.8 square miles (17.7 km2) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) (8.43%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,510 people, 1,459 households, and 948 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 513.1 people per square mile (198.1/km2). There were 1,580 housing units at an average density of 231.0/sq mi (89.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 81.34% White, 0.34% African American, 9.60% Native American, 2.42% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 4.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.05% of the population.

Trout Lake, Washington

Trout Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) in Klickitat County, Washington, United States. The population was 557 at the 2010 census. The town is notable for its organic dairy and herb farms, and as an access point to Mount Adams and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.4 km²), of which, 7.1 square miles (18.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.70%) is water.

As of the 2010 United States Census,[4] there were 557 people, 224 households, and 171 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 78.5 people per square mile. There were 290 housing units at an average density of 40.8/sq mi. The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.6% White, 0.2% Black, 0.9% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.5% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.

Klickitat, Washington

Klickitat is an unincorporated town located along the Klickitat River. Once the site of a lumber mill it is now primarily a bedroom community. The closest major town in Washington is Goldendale. There are also several residential areas near Klickitat including, Pitt and Wahkiacus. On the Oregon side the nearest large towns are Hood River and The Dalles.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 417 people, 147 households, and 110 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 161.9 people per square mile (62.4/km²). There were 173 housing units at an average density of 67.2/sq mi (25.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.33% White, 0.24% African American, 3.60% Native American, 0.96% Asian, and 2.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.64% of the population.

There were 147 households out of which 43.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.28.

Westport, Washington

Westport is a city in Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States. The city's population was 2,099 at the 2010 census. It is located on a peninsula on the south side of the entrance to Grays Harbor from the Pacific Ocean.

The public Westport Marina is the largest marina on the outer coast of the United States's Pacific Northwest. The marina is home to a large commercial fishing fleet and several recreational charter fishing vessels. A summer-only passenger ferry, discontinued in 2008, previously connected the town to Ocean Shores, across the mouth of the harbor to the north.

Westport was officially incorporated on June 26, 1914. Names for the area in the past include Peterson's Point, Chehalis City, and Fort Chehalis. The latter name is for a U.S. Army fort established in 1860 before the town was founded, "ts-a-lis" is the Lower Chehalis word for Westport, meaning "place of sand". Early explorers pronounced the word "Chehalis" and gave this name to the river and the people living up river who later became the Chehalis people or "People of the Sands". The area was used regularly during the summer by local Native American tribes (most likely the Shoalwater Bay Tribe, comprising Willapa Chinook and Lower Chehalis people) before Thomas Barker Speake and his family arrived early in the summer of 1857. Westport is also the home to a station for the US Coast Guard. In 2015, the Ocosta School District became the first to build a publicly funded vertical tsunami shelter, located at Ocosta Elementary School.

Tacoma, Washington

Tacoma (/təˈkoʊmə/ tə-KOH-mə) is a mid-sized urban port city and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States.[6] The city is on Washington's Puget Sound, 32 miles (51 km) southwest of Seattle (of which it is the largest satellite city), 31 miles (50 km) northeast of the state capital, Olympia, and 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. The population was 198,397, according to the 2010 census.[7] Tacoma is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area and the third largest in the state. Tacoma also serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region, which has a population of around 1 million.

Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Takhoma or Tahoma. It is locally known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad, Tacoma's motto became "When rails meet sails". Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a center of international trade on the Pacific Coast and Washington State's largest port.

Like most central cities, Tacoma suffered a prolonged decline in the mid-20th century as a result of suburbanization and divestment. Since the 1990s, developments in the downtown core include the University of Washington Tacoma; Tacoma Link, the first modern electric light rail service in the state; the state's highest density of art and history museums; and a restored urban waterfront, the Thea Foss Waterway. Neighborhoods such as the 6th Avenue District have been revitalized. With over $1 billion having been invested in downtown Tacoma alone, private investment has surpassed public investment by a ratio of almost 4:1.[8]

Spokane metropolitan area

The Spokane–Spokane Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of Spokane, Stevens, and Pend Oreille Counties in Washington State, anchored by the city of Spokane and its largest suburb, Spokane Valley. As of 2016 the MSA had a population of 556,634. The Spokane Metropolitan Area and the neighboring Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area, make up the larger Spokane–Coeur d'Alene combined statistical area. The urban areas of the two MSAs largely follow the path of Interstate 90 between Spokane and Coeur d'Alene. In 2010, the Spokane–Spokane Valley MSA had a gross metropolitan product of $20.413 billion.[1]

As of 2013, there were 535,189 people and 208,513 households residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 86% White, 2% Black, 1% Native, 2% Asian, 0% Islander, and 5% Hispanic. According to the Association of Religion Data Archives' 2010 Metro Area Membership Report, the denominational affiliations of the Spokane MSA are 64,277 Evangelical Protestant, 682 Black Protestant, 24,826 Mainline Protestant, 754 Orthodox, 66,202 Catholic, 31,674 Other, and 339,338 Unclaimed.[2]

Waitsburg, Washington

Waitsburg is a city in Walla Walla County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,217 at the 2010 census. Waitsburg has a unique city classification in the State of Washington: it is the only city which still operates under its territorial charter.

Waitsburg was first settled in 1859 by Robert Kennedy. The town name commemorates Sylvester M. Wait, who established a mill there in 1864. Wait previously opened, and named, the city of Phoenix, Oregon several years earlier.[5][6] William Perry Bruce and his wife, Caroline, moved to Waitsburg in 1861, some two decades before Waitsburg was officially incorporated on November 25, 1881. In 1882, they built a large home in the town that is now a museum.

This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Waitsburg has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[9]

White Salmon, Washington

White Salmon is a city in Klickitat County, Washington, United States. It is located in the Columbia River Gorge. The population was 2,193 at the 2000 census and increased 1.4% to 2,224 at the 2010 census.

White Salmon was part of the home of the Klickitat Tribe, now a part of the Yakama Confederated Nations. The Klickitat Tribe sold some land to the Joslyns. They were generally Native advocates for the time. The area was thrown open on October 31, 1858 for white settlement after the Klickitat and Yakama lost the fight for their homelands in the Yakama War. Within the same year, the region was very rapidly and heavily settled by white immigrants making land claims. The Klickitat were forced to relocate to the Yakama Reservation.[7]

White Salmon's current city government includes Mayor David Poucher, who was re-elected to a new, four-year term in November 2011. City council member Mark Peppel (Position 4), who ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Poucher, remains on the council for the last 2 years of his current term. New council members elected in November 2011 to four-year terms include Bill Werst (Position 1), George Rau (Position 2), Jason Sabourin (Position 3) and Allan Wolf (Position 5).[9]

Taholah, Washington

Taholah is a census-designated place (CDP) on the Quinault Indian Reservation, in Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States. Named for a Quinault chief in 1905,[3] its population was 840 at the 2010 census.[4] The headquarters for the Quinault Indian Nation was moved to Taholah from the town of Quinault on the shore of Lake Quinault.

Taholah is located in northwestern Grays Harbor County at 47°20′44″N 124°17′16″W / 47.34556°N 124.28778°W / 47.34556; -124.28778 (47.345610, -124.287767).[6] The Quinault River empties into the Pacific Ocean on the northern edge of Taholah.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Taholah CDP has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2), of which 3.5 square miles (9.0 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 1.92%, are water.[4]

Twisp, Washington

Twisp, along with several neighboring towns in Okanogan County, was evacuated in August 2015 as a result of the Okanogan Complex fire. Three firefighters were killed while battling one of the complex's fires near Twisp on August 19.[9]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 919 people, 474 households, and 222 families residing in the town. The population density was 778.8 inhabitants per square mile (300.7/km2). There were 524 housing units at an average density of 444.1 per square mile (171.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.6% White, 0.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.

There were 474 households of which 20.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 53.2% were non-families. 46.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.94 and the average family size was 2.72.
