Vivian, Louisiana

Vivian developed as a trading center and center of a retail area that included smaller towns in the area. During its heyday, people from the region used to visit Vivian for shopping and movies, especially on the weekends.

Local Democratic Party politician Earl Guyton Williamson had considerable power in the town and parish. A supporter of politician Huey Long, he served as mayor from 1938 to 1946, and again from 1962 to 1966. During all this period, until after 1965, African Americans were essentially disenfranchised in Vivian and the state.

Williamson had been a politician in northern Caddo Parish since the Great Depression, serving on the police jury for more than four decades, from 1933 to 1972. After restructuring of parish government, Williamson was elected to the Caddo Parish Commission in 1978, serving one term to 1980. State law at the time permitted Williamson to occupy both the parish and town posts while he also served as mayor, concentrating political power in the small town.

Winnsboro, Louisiana

Winnsboro is a city in, and the parish seat of Franklin Parish, Louisiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,910,[3] down from 5,344 in 2000. The city is 59 percent African American.[4]U.S. Highway 425 passes north–south through Winnsboro concurrent with Louisiana Highway 15 and extends northward to Rayville, the seat of neighboring Richland Parish.

Franklin Parish was created on March 1, 1843, from portions of Ouachita, Catahoula, and Madison parishes through the efforts of Senator John Winn. The parish was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin.[citation needed] Land for a centrally located parish seat, Winnsborough (later Winnsboro), was purchased in 1844. It was designated as the parish seat of government in 1846 and incorporated on March 18, 1902, during the administration of Governor William Wright Heard.[citation needed]

Early Winnsboro City records show that the telephone came to Winnsboro in 1905; electricity in 1914; and water and sewer service in 1923. In 1924, a volunteer fire department was formed.[citation needed] In 1938 a bond issue to build the present municipal building was approved, and the following year citizens agreed to the purchase of the Landis municipal park property. Most of the community's streets were hard surfaced after 1950.[citation needed]

Wakefield (film)

Wakefield is a 2016 American comedy-drama film directed and written by Robin Swicord and starring Bryan Cranston and Jennifer Garner. It is based on the short story of same name by E. L. Doctorow,[2] which was in turn inspired by the 1835 story of the same title by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Howard Wakefield, a successful attorney in New York City, is unhappy in his marriage of fifteen years to Diana, a beautiful art curator and former dancer. They used flirtation with other people to add excitement to their sex life, but Diana soon begins to resent it. One night, Howard returns home late from his commute, which has been disrupted and delayed by a widespread power outage, and is distracted by a raccoon he sees entering his garage, which is detached from the house. He chases the raccoon into the garage's attic, where he realizes he has a perfect view into his house, where his wife and two daughters, Taylor and Giselle, are eating dinner. He ignores calls from his wife and is amused at her clear annoyance, but is insulted when she angrily throws his plate of dinner away instead of saving it for him. To avoid a fight, he decides to wait a bit to go into the house, but he ends up falling asleep.

The next morning, Howard realizes Diana will never believe his story of spending the night in the garage and will insist he was having an affair, so he plans to wait for her to leave for work before going in. Instead, he is shocked when, after finding his car still in the garage, she calls the police to report him missing. Howard feels bad when he sees Diana cry, but before he can go inside, his overbearing mother-in-law, Babs, shows up to comfort her. Babs and Diana appear to argue about his absence, with Diana showing her mother there is no evidence he has taken any money to run off. Howard finally goes inside to shower after Diana leaves for work, planning to just deal with the fallout of his absence, before he starts resenting the idea that she is carrying on with her routine after his disappearance. He realizes that his disappearance is probably a relief to her, believing that she probably thinks that she married the wrong man. He cleans up any evidence that he was at the house, grabs some food from the pantry and returns to the garage.

Wisner, Louisiana

The Holly Grove Colored Baptist Church in Wisner was established in the post-slavery period after the Civil War through the work of pastor Eldridge King David Swayzer. One of Swayzer's descendants, Frances Swayzer Conley, an English professor at Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City and a resident of Shreveport, has written a pictorial family history entitled Home to Holly Grove: Cherishing Our Rich Heritage.[8]

Wisner is located in southern Franklin Parish at 31°58′52″N 91°39′21″W / 31.98111°N 91.65583°W / 31.98111; -91.65583 (31.981030, -91.655866),[9] along U.S. Route 425, which leads north 14 miles (23 km) to Winnsboro, the parish seat, and south 9 miles (14 km) to Sicily Island.

As of the census[11] of 2000, there were 1,140 people, 398 households, and 280 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,435.7 people per square mile (557.2/km²). There were 456 housing units at an average density of 574.3 per square mile (222.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 63.33% White, 35.53% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.09% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population.

Walker, Louisiana

Walker is a city in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 6,138 as of the 2010 census, making Walker and Denham Springs the only parish municipalities classified as cities.[3]

The area now known as Walker was founded by Michael Joseph Milton, Jr. (1795-1863) and “several slaves” in 1825.[4] Michael Milton married in 1832 in Livingston Parish.[5] He and his wife, Martha Clark Milton (1803-1878) developed 343 acres from a Land Grant for his service in the War of 1812. [6][7]The Milton family was a pioneering family from North Carolina who settled an area in Alabama, before establishing the new community in the piney woods east of the Amite River and Denham Springs.[8][9][10] In this sense, Walker, Louisiana, by virtue of its founding, traces its roots to the founding of the nation in Jamestown.[10] The Federal government recognized the growth of the settlement and opened a post office as Milton Old Field in 1856.[11] Michael Milton was appointed as postmaster in 1858.[12] In 1890 the post office was renamed after Dr. William Elliott Walker, M.D., a legislator from nearby Springfield, who had, also, served as a Lt. Col. in the Confederate States of America.[13]

Walker is located at 30°29′22″N 90°51′46″W / 30.48944°N 90.86278°W / 30.48944; -90.86278 (30.489423, -90.862872).[15] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.8 square miles (14.9 km²), all land.

Ooh La La (Faces song)

The lead vocals were provided by Wood, a rarity in the band's catalog because most lead vocals were by Rod Stewart or less often by Ronnie Lane. Stewart and Lane recorded lead vocals for it; however, their producer suggested Wood give it a try, and this version was used for the track on the album.

Lane recorded his own version after leaving the Faces in 1973 with his new group Slim Chance. Lane's version featuring lyrics slightly altered from those he wrote for the Faces. Although Lane's version was never released during his lifetime, it appeared as the title track of the 2014 Slim Chance compilation Ooh La La: An Island Harvest. Lane performed his version of the song until he retired from the music business in 1992.

The lyrics describe a dialogue between a grandfather and grandson, with the elder man's warning the younger about the perils of relationships with women: "Poor old granddad, I laughed at all his words / I thought he was a bitter man; he spoke of women's ways." The chorus laments, "I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger."

Carlotta Walls LaNier

Carlotta Walls LaNier (born December 18, 1942) was the youngest of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who, in 1957, were the first black students ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States. She was the first black female to graduate from Central High School. In 1999, LaNier and the rest of the Little Rock Nine were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton.[citation needed]

Carlotta Walls LaNier was born in 1942 Little Rock, Arkansas to Juanita and Cartelyou Walls. Cartelyou was a brick mason and a World War II veteran, while Juanita was a secretary in the Office of Public Housing. Cartelyou died in 1976 from leukemia.[citation needed]

Carlotta first attended Dunbar Junior High School, a segregated school in Little Rock. However, after graduating, she volunteered to be one of the first African-Americans to attend Central High School. She married Ira (Ike) LaNier in 1968 with whom she had two children, Whitney and Brooke. She has two grandchildren, a granddaughter and a grandson. She currently resides in Englewood, Colorado.

Woodworth, Louisiana

This town is growing rapidly with a number of residential subdivisions under development. Woodworth is emerging as a bedroom community for nearby Alexandria, to the northeast. Louisiana State Senator Joe McPherson resides in Woodworth, as did the late State Representative R. W. "Buzzy" Graham, who operated an insurance agency in Alexandria.

According to a 2007 report, Woodworth was named one of the 10 worst speed traps in the state of Louisiana. Woodworth made 61.32% of its revenue, an average of roughly $706 per capita, from fines and forfeitures in the 2005 fiscal year.

This climatic region is typified by relatively small seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and mild winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Woodworth has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[4]

Youngsville, Louisiana

Youngsville today still reflects its history in its people, culture, traditions, and architecture. It was settled in the early 19th century by French Acadian farmers. Prior to 1839, George Roy and his son, Desire, laid out the area and named the community "Royville." The settlement had grown by 1859 large enough to establish one of the oldest Catholic Churches in Lafayette Parish; St. Anne Catholic Church, and had named its oldest street, Church Street. In 1908, the United States Postal Service asked village leaders to change the name because the town was being confused with the north Louisiana town of Rayville. So in 1908, the Village of Youngsville was incorporated. The village was named "Youngsville," meaning young village, and incorporated. It chose a democratic government, an elected Mayor and three Aldermen, to govern its people.

The Village continued to develop and on January 20, 1983, Louisiana Governor David C. Treen declared the village a town. The town chose as its governing body, a Mayor and five Aldermen to accommodate its population.

Youngsville has been the fastest growing town in Louisiana from 1990 to 2005. Its population has increased by over 300 percent. According to the 2010 Census, Youngsville grew at a rate of 103% between year 2000 and 2010. Because of its growth, Youngsville was declared a city by then Governor Kathleen Blanco in 2006.[6] From 2000 to 2007, the City of Youngsville was one of the fastest growing municipalities in the State of Louisiana. In 2007, Mayor Wilson Viator and the Youngsville City Council named Joey Langlinais as the Chairman of the Centennial Committee.[7]
