Sweet, Idaho

Sweet is an unincorporated community in Gem County, Idaho, United States. It is located in open countryside 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Emmett, along a county highway 8 miles due north of its intersection with State Highway 52.[2]

Founded in 1885 by Ezekiel Sweet, the community initially was a supply location and post office for farmers and ranchers in the nearby Lower Squaw Creek Valley. Sweet grew significantly as a result of the later Thunder Mountain Mines gold strike; by 1900, it supported three saloons, three hotels, several businesses, and a newspaper, which lasted until the gold mines petered out. Several subsequent fires destroyed most of the historic downtown. Today, a smaller Sweet is the location of a restaurant and post office.[3]

Weippe, Idaho

Weippe (/ˈwiːˈaɪp/ (listen)) is a city in Clearwater County, Idaho, United States. The population was 441 at the 2010 census, up from 411 in 2000.[4] In September 1805, the starving Lewis and Clark Expedition first met the Nez Perce on the Weippe Prairie, south of the city.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 441 people, 198 households, and 121 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,050.0 inhabitants per square mile (405.4/km2). There were 230 housing units at an average density of 547.6 per square mile (211.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.4% White, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.

There were 198 households of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.9% were non-families. 31.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.77.

Pocatello, Idaho

Pocatello (/ˈpoʊkəˈtɛloʊ/ (listen)) is the county seat and largest city of Bannock County,[4] with a small portion on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in neighboring Power County, in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Idaho. It is the principal city of the Pocatello metropolitan area, which encompasses all of Bannock county. As of the 2010 census the population of Pocatello was 54,255.[5]

Pocatello is the fifth-largest city in the state, just behind Idaho Falls (population of 56,813). In 2007, Pocatello was ranked twentieth on Forbes list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers.[6] Pocatello is the home of Idaho State University and the manufacturing facility of ON Semiconductor. The city is at an elevation of 4,462 feet (1,360 m) above sea level and is served by the Pocatello Regional Airport.

Founded in 1889, Pocatello was known as the "Gateway to the Northwest". As pioneers, gold miners and settlers traveled the Oregon Trail, they passed through the Portneuf Gap south of town. Stage and freight lines and the railroad soon followed, turning the community into a trade center and transportation junction.

Weiser, Idaho

Weiser (/ˈwiːzər/ WEE-zər) is a city in the rural western part of the U.S. state of Idaho and the county seat of Washington County.[4] With its mild climate, the city supports farm, orchard, and livestock endeavors in the vicinity. The city sits at the confluence of the Weiser River with the great Snake River, which marks the border with Oregon. The population was 5,507 at the 2010 census.[5]

The city was named after the nearby Weiser River, but exactly who that was named for is not precisely known. In one version it is for Peter M. Weiser, a soldier and member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804–1806. Another has it for Jacob Weiser, a trapper-turned-miner who struck it rich in Baboon Gulch in the Florence Basin of Idaho in 1861.

William Logan and his wife Nancy were the first white settlers in the vicinity of Weiser in 1863 building a roadhouse in anticipation of the opening of Olds Ferry west of them on the Snake River across from Farewell Bend. In 1863, Reuben Olds acquired a franchise from the Territorial Legislature and began operating Olds Ferry.[6] Olds ferry business did well (as did Logan's) as it diverted much of the traffic from the old Snake River crossing point at Old Fort Boise. Increasing settlement on the Weiser River valley increased Weiser's population. A post office was established in 1866 as Weiser Ranch. In 1871, it was renamed Weiser.[7]

Tensed, Idaho

Tensed is a city in Benewah County, Idaho, United States. The population was 123 at the 2010 census, down from 126 in 2000.[5] The city is within the Coeur d'Alene Reservation, and is accessed by U.S. Route 95, the state's primary north-south highway.

The city was originally called Desmet, after the Belgian Jesuit missionary Pierre-Jean De Smet, who was active with the Coeur d'Alene nation, but the post office requested a change as that name was taken by nearby De Smet. The name was reversed to Temsed and then misspelled by the post office.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 123 people, 58 households, and 30 families residing in the city. The population density was 647.4 inhabitants per square mile (250.0/km2). There were 69 housing units at an average density of 363.2 per square mile (140.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 69.1% White, 24.4% Native American, 0.8% from other races, and 5.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

Wendell, Idaho

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 2,782 people, 978 households, and 695 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,045.6 inhabitants per square mile (789.8/km2). There were 1,054 housing units at an average density of 775.0 per square mile (299.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.2% White, 0.2% African American, 1.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 21.9% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 35.7% of the population.

There were 978 households of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.9% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.37.

The median age in the city was 31.9 years. 30.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.5% were from 25 to 44; 19.7% were from 45 to 64; and 14.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.1% male and 48.9% female.

Latter Day Church of Christ

The Latter Day Church of Christ[2] is a Mormon fundamentalist denomination in the Latter Day Saint movement. Also known as the Kingston Clan or the Kingston Group, it is a part of The Order, or the Davis County Cooperative, and The Co-op Society.[3] There are approximately 3,500 members of this group.[4]

According to his autobiography, Charles W. Kingston became disenchanted with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1926 because of its abandonment of plural marriage. Kingston began preaching polygamy amongst fellow members of the LDS Church as well as distributing pamphlets and the book, Laman Manasseh Victorious: A Message of Salvation and Redemption to His People Israel, First to Ephraim and Manasseh, which he had co-written. This eventually resulted in his excommunication from the LDS Church in 1929. By 1935, following the excommunication from the LDS Church, his followers began moving to Bountiful with the intention to live under a United Order communalist program as defined by Joseph Smith in the Doctrine and Covenants.[5] On February 7, 1941, the community founded by Elden Kingston officially declared themselves the Davis County Cooperative Society Inc. The corporation produces goods and services that are used by members, and sold or traded to other cooperatives and to the public.[6] In 1977, Elden's brother Ortell Kingston began to file for legal recognition of the church later organized as The Latter Day Church of Christ.[7][verification needed]

Over the decades, the Cooperative has maintained extreme secrecy while developing an extensive cooperative system with assets at an unconfirmed value of over $150 million.[8] Their secrecy comes from a fear of arrest for living plural marriage, which originated in 1959-1960 when being investigated by the Davis County Grand Jury, which they claim was organized by LDS Apostles Mark E. Peterson & Spencer W. Kimball.[9][10]

Weston, Idaho

Weston is a city in Franklin County, Idaho, United States. The population was 437 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Logan, Utah-Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled in 1865.[4] The community was so named on account of its location at the west bank of the Bear River.[5]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 437 people, 139 households, and 112 families residing in the city. The population density was 221.8 inhabitants per square mile (85.6/km2). There were 147 housing units at an average density of 74.6 per square mile (28.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.4% White, 0.5% African American, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.

There were 139 households of which 45.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.1% were married couples living together, 4.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 19.4% were non-families. 18.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.63.

Jackson, Wyoming

Jackson is a small city in the Jackson Hole valley of Teton County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,577 at the 2010 census, up from 8,647 in 2000. It is the county seat of Teton County and is its largest town.[6]

The town gained significant fame when a livestream of the town square went viral on YouTube in 2016, leading to much fascination with the town's elk antler arch, its law enforcement, and its prevalence of red trucks.[8][9]

As of the 2010 Census,[4] the main industries which provide employment are: arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services (32.2%), construction (8.7%), retail trade (12.4%), educational services, health care and social assistance (11.9%), and professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services (11.8%).

White Bird, Idaho

At the southwest corner of the Camas Prairie, White Bird is near the Salmon River crossing point for the Lewis and Clark expedition. It is also the location of the 1877 Battle of White Bird Canyon, which was the first fight of the Nez Perce War and a significant defeat of the U.S. Army. Chief White Bird was a leader of the tribe. The summit of White Bird Hill is 2,700 feet (820 m) above the city, ascended via U.S. Highway 95.[5]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 91 people, 53 households, and 27 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,300.0 inhabitants per square mile (501.9/km2). There were 64 housing units at an average density of 914.3 per square mile (353.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 53 households of which 7.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 3.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 49.1% were non-families. 41.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.72 and the average family size was 2.26.
